“Go, Sam, Go” is the story of Sam Neace’s 500-mile walk from his hometown of Hazard, Kentucky to Oprah Winfrey’s studio in Chicago, Illinois. In September of 2009 and just eighteen months removed from chemotherapy, Sam, an author, set out across the Kentucky coalfields on a mission to make good on his second chance at life. He had two goals for his trip to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to hand deliver copies of his writings to Oprah. Along the way, Sam braved the elements, voracious pets, local celebrities, and the entire state of Indiana to finally arrive at 1058 West Washington Boulevard in downtown Chicago. This book, which includes the journal Sam kept during his battle with cancer, chronicles not just a journey on foot from Kentucky mountains to Chicago sidewalks, but also a journey through adversity and disease to find out just what can happen when we reach a point in life where there’s no choice left but to go meet Oprah, if she will meet him.

Having myself undertaken a very long walk for charity (and written a book about it) I am always interested in similar experiences and similar books.Sam is a young man so, based on my own experience of walking more than twice the distance at the age of 70, his walk should be an easy one. But Sam was recovering from (fortunately successful) treatment for testicular cancer when he set off from Kentucky to Chicago. Clearly this put his walk into a different league than otherwise.
Unlike some other walkers I have read about, Sam did have the sense to train for his ordeal. When people ask me what advice I would give, I always say the more training you can do, the better. The second thing I say is "Use Vaseline on your feet and on all points subject to friction. Fortunately Sam found out about the Vaseline during the walk but before it was too late.
His book is entertaining and informative. He takes the space, in flashbacks, to give a very good impression of what a horrible business it is to undergo chemotherapy.
I really enjoyed the book and am sure his experiences will enrich his life but I share the disappointment he must have with the celebrities involved, and with some of the support he rightly expected but did not receive.
Keep up the writing, Sam. It is your dream to succeed, and you surely will.

Go Sam Go A dreamer 500mile walk to Oprah Sam Neace 9781481804998 Books Reviews
This is such a wonderful book. My children have relatives in the Hindman-Pinetop-Carr Fork area and I have been there many times. It was an inspiration to read your book and I pray you live a very long life. Good Luck Sam Neace.
Would you have the courage to set out on a 500 mile journey on foot? Me, personally? No. However, it wasn't just the courage to set out on this once in a lifetime experience, but to do so after just having gone through possibly one of the scariest and emotionally draining experiences of your life, cancer, is even more amazing! This book had me laughing out loud one minute and almost in tears the next. It also made me realize, that there isn't anything in life you cannot accomplish. All you have to do is try!
This was a most interesting novel by a country boy trying to make his dreams come true, by walking 500 mile. It has many side story that developed along the way to Chicago and of course the main reason for the walk to start with. I really enjoyed reading this book and i'm sure you will also.
What a great book to read! I picked this up after coming home from vacation in Kentucky where I briefly met Sam. I had no idea of his cancer or his walk until I looked up the book when I came back to Australia. This book is a great adventure that anyone can enjoy. Each day brought new encounters and challenges for Sam. It is well written and easy to read and I found I could relate to a lot of it. Not that I've ever walked that far! There are also some laugh out loud moments in there which balances the book well against the darker moments of cancer treatment. Do yourself a favour and order a copy, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
I picked up "Go, Sam, Go" on the recommendation of a friend. The $5.00 price tag for the version was certainly convincing enough to pick up for a quick read. I found the battle with cancer, discipline, endurance, and ambition demonstrated by the author to be absolutely outstanding. I guess anyone with enough gumption to attempt a 500 mile walk is either incredibly motivated or undeniably insane. I found the book to be a delight. I shed a tear or two, laughed a little, and shook my head at times. There were some parts a little too crass for my taste, but overall, a good and inspiring read.
Go, Sam, Go! A Dreamer’s 500-mile Walk to Oprah
By Sam Neace
One man’s memoir of his hike from Kentucky to Illinois is also meant to raise awareness of testicular cancer.
Don’t let the title fool you. This is not a story of a simple trek. Walk a while with testicular cancer survivor Sam Neace and you’ll never have a dull moment. His personality, sense of humor, and relatable tales along the way will have you smiling and chuckling all the way through the book. Along his journey he is faced with extreme weather, self-doubt, prejudice, and down right mean people sometimes, but he is also blessed by family, long-time friends and new acquaintances who offered their continued generosity, kindness, and unwavering support.
His reasons for walking are noble and admirable— is walk is for cancer charity, his goal is a book endorsement from Oprah herself— but his travels became an amusing and enlightening collection of unforseen wonders and humorous memories. At times you’ll wish you had been right beside him for the journey. Sam balances his tale with wit, comedic wisdom, and heart-tugging details about his experience with testicular cancer treatment. His story is a fun read, but also a thought provoking insight to anyone whose life is touched by cancer.
A walk worth taking with Sam that will have you feeling like one of his closest friends.

I have read all three of Sam Neace's publications and all three have been fabulous. However, Sam Neace's latest creation is definitely his best. The author speaks of his troubles and trials as he takes an adventure from Hazard, Kentucky to Chicago to hand deliver his book, "Bad Boy" to Oprah. This may not seem like a big deal, but he isn't driving there in a vehicle, he is walking. Folks, that's 500 miles. I die a little inside just THINKING about walking 500 miles. All the money along the way was raised to help cancer victims, as Neace himself is a testicular cancer survivor. This book is definitely worth $5.00 (kindle version) and a whole lot more. It made me laugh, cry, ponder, and I will always value Go, Sam, Go as one of my personal favorites. Well done, Sam. Keep up the good work.
